I just finished reading Carrie’s book, A Listening Heart.”

Carrie is my sister, so I have heard many of these stories before but not all of them. The common theme throughout is truly – God spoke and they listened, no matter what the cost. I witnessed them, time after time going where God led them. So the title of the book is very fitting. Indeed there were many times they didn’t have all the details figured out, many unknowns with their children in tow. They went. That is true obedience and something I have been amazed by over the years.

Secondly, the part about Joy in suffering really impacted me because I know how much physical pain Carrie had endured. I have witnessed how His grace was sufficient for her and how God used her weakness to show His strength!

I also had a moment with the Holy Spirit as I was reading and He convicted me of something I needed to deal with. I believe her book inspired me to do that.

Lastly, I hope others will be encouraged to follow in Ralph and Carrie’s footsteps as they are great examples of ‘faith in action’.

Congrats on your book, Carrie. It has been an incredible labor of love!

Imagine with me, Carrie as a tree. She has been prumed, grafted, carved, cut down. She has held nests lined with feathers and heart strings. Funny bones are tickled when these float down on the gentle wind landing softly on loved ones and passersby. She really does bloom where she is planted. There are prickles, nuts, and a little dripping sap, but the soft tips of new growth are what touch you. She produces sweet fruit, that grows year after year. She may have been struck by lightening a few times, but the carved promises of Jesus and initialed hearts are still carved in her trunk. Her family has clasped their hands together and with outstreched arms surrounded her. Roots run deep and around her is fertile soil where many many shoots have sprung up. In every life rain must fall, but sheltered by her shade, and face to the sun, she’s created a forest that will keep on growing. Carrie, your book has been illuminating, inspiring, totally relatable, and thought provoking. I Especially loved the parrallels of missional & familial stories in my own life cycle. The illustrations are creative and extremely eye catching. I would recommend this read to anyone who requires encouragement and desires to delight in adventure through the life of a remarkable woman (my dear cousin). God has Blessed all of us, through you. Thank you for writing this book – – It will be a treasure to all who read it.
